This update utility was written to help keep the cost of software development over the phone lines down to a minimum. It can be very costly to repeatedly upload new versions to a team of beta testers every time a bug is fixed.
The time spent online can add up to thousands of dollars for the developer before the software is ready for release. In addition, beta testers do not usually get paid for their work. Therefore, any time spent online downloading will come out of their pockets, unless the service used has a free message and file retrieval policy. Nonetheless, most would agree that the less time spent downloading, the better.
BetaHelper helps with just that, by updating the existing software under development. Now, only the changes need to be sent to the beta testers. The testers will only need to double click the update file and then locate the old software in a file dialog box. That's all it takes from the test team. However, the developer will have to do a little more work. It's described in detail in the accompanying developer notes, or in the About… box.
BetaHelper is made available free of charge. There are no restrictions on making and distributing unmodified copies of BetaHelper, provided this document is included. Nonetheless, the application may not be commercially sold or distributed, without written permission by the developer. However, permission is granted for making the software freely available on any bulletin board and computer online service. In addition, BetaHelper may also be freely distributed on floppy disks and CD-ROM by Macintosh User Groups, if no more than actual cost is charged. BetaHelper is copyright N. Jonas Englund.
